National (U.S.)


Inflation Reduction Act – Urban and Community Forestry

U.S. Department of Agriculture – Forest Service (FS) Urban and Community Forestry Program

This grant supports a wide range of activities to advance community engagement in urban forestry and encourage long-term urban forest planning, assessment, and management. A full list of eligible activities can be found in the grant guidelines below.

Eligible Applicants: state or local government entities; Federally Recognized Tribes, Alaska Native Corporations/villages, and Tribal organizations; non-profit organizations; public and state-controlled institutions of higher education; and community based organizations

Grant Amounts: $100,000 - $50,000,000 per grant

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT PROGRAM

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

This grant supports community-based nonprofit organizations in their efforts to collaborate and partner with other stakeholders to develop solutions that will significantly address environmental and/or public health issue(s) in communities disproportionately burdened by environmental harms and risks.

Eligible Applicants: a community-based nonprofit organization or a partnership of community-based nonprofit organizations

Grant Amounts: Up to $500,000 per community-based nonprofit with >5 full-time employees; Up to $150,000 per community-based nonprofit with <5 full-time employees

Environmental Justice Government-to-Government Program

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

This grant provides funding at the state, local, territorial, and tribal level to support government activities that lead to measurable environmental or public health impacts in communities disproportionately burdened by environmental harms.

Eligible Applicants: A partnership between a state and a community-based nonprofit organization; a partnership between a tribe and a community-based nonprofit organization; a partnership between a local government and a community-based nonprofit organization; or US Territories, Freely Associated States, and tribal governments in remote areas

Grant Amounts: Up to $1,000,000 per award

California


California Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act Grant

California Department of Forestry and Fire Projection (CAL FIRE)

This grant program supports disinvested, disadvantaged, and low-income urban communities in growing equitable access to trees and their benefits. Grant types include: Urban Forest Expansion and Improvement activities such as tree planting; Urban Forest Management Activities such as tree inventories and urban forest management plans; Urban Forestry Education and Workforce Development; Urban Forestry Regional and Statewide Impact; Urban Forest Equity Capacity Building; and Green Schoolyards.

Eligible Applicants: Local government entities, tribes, nonprofits, schools and school districts

Grant Amounts: $150,000 - $1.5M or $3M, depending on grant category

Green Schoolyards Grant - Nonprofit Child Care Facilities

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)

This grant program provides funding for planning and implementation of schoolyard greening projects at nonprofit child care facilities receiving government funding in California. This includes, but is not limited to: asphalt removal, tree planting, installing natural features for learning and recess (e.g. pocket forests, rain gardens, botanical gardens, natural playgrounds, food producing gardens, and landscaping), outdoor classrooms, and maintenance of planted vegetation.

Eligible Applicants: cities, counties, qualifying districts, or nonprofit organizations

Grant Amounts: $200,000 and $6,000,000 awarded per application including no more than $1,000,000 per child care facility

Urban and Community Forestry Program Grant

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)

This grant provides funding for a range of activities related to urban forestry including plant establishment and care; longterm forest maintenance and maintenance planning; planting site preparation; job training and workforce development; and advocacy and outreach. Schoolyard greening projects which meet grant criteria may be funded under one of this grant program’s six grant types.

Eligible Applicants: Cities, counties, qualifying districts, or nonprofit organizations qualified under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Districts include, but are not limited to, school, park, recreation, water, and local taxing districts. Must be in urban areas (>2,500 people) in the state of California.

Grant Amounts: $150,000 – $10,000,000 per grant

Upcoming Events: Though at this time there is no state funding available for UCF Grants, the budget process remains ongoing and the UCF Program believes funding could be available before the end of this fiscal year.


Integrated Climate Adaptation and Resiliency (ICARP) Grant Programs

California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research

The ICARP Grant Programs provide funding to help fill local, regional, and tribal adaptation planning and resilience needs, provide resources, and support the development of a pipeline of climate resilient projects.

Strategic Growth Council Community Resilience Center Grant

California Strategic Growth Council

The program will fund physical infrastructure, including retrofits and new construction of facilities and accompanying campus amenities, as well as social infrastructure, including integrated delivery of services and programs to share knowledge, build networks, and strengthen capacity.

Eligible Applicants: All applicants must be based in California. See grant guidelines for full details of eligibility.

Grant Amounts: $200,000 to $500,000 for planning grant; $5,000,000 to $10,000,000 for implementation grant

Statewide Park and Community Revitalization Program

California Department Parks and Recreation

This grant program provides funding for projects to: create a new park, expand an existing park, or renovate an existing park. All projects should create new recreation opportunities as their primary goal. Schoolyard greening projects are included in this grant program for joint-use schoolyards that are open to the community after hours.

Eligible Applicants: Cities, counties, special districts, nonprofit organizations, or joint powers authorities in the state of California. School districts are not eligible applicants for this grant.

Grant Amounts: $200,000 – $8,500,000 per grant

Upcoming Deadlines: Round 5 is postponed and applications will not be due in 2023


Urban Greening Program

California Natural Resources Agency

Eligible Applicants: Cities, counties, special districts, nonprofit organizations, or joint powers authorities in the state of California

Grant Amounts: No minimums or maximums per grant

Upcoming Deadlines: The Urban Greening Grant Program solicitation is now closed. Proposals are no longer being accepted.


Texas


Community Forestry Grants - Schoolyard Forests

Texas A&M Forest Service

Create neighborhood schoolyard forested greenspace by increasing tree cover to 30% on school campuses and installing nature playspaces. Each grant provides funds for up to 8 campus transformations within a single Independent School District (ISD) and includes a forest literacy curriculum implementation component.

Eligible Applicants: Units of local governments (city, town, county); Non-profit organizations (501c3) in good standing; Tribal entities; State government agencies; Educational institutions (ISDs, Colleges and Universities); Public utility districts (PUD, MUD, etc.)

Grant Amounts: Up to 5 Awards for $3,120,000 each
